Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to restore lost volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. They’re often used alongside or instead of anti-wrinkle injections like Botox to target static wrinkles (those present at rest) and volume loss due to aging.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

• Hyaluronic Acid (HA) – e.g., Juvederm®, Restylane®

  • Hydrating, natural sugar found in the body

  • Temporary (6–18 months depending on type/area)

  • Reversible with an enzyme called hyaluronidase

• Calcium Hydroxylapatite – e.g., Radiesse®

  • Thicker filler for deeper lines or volume loss

  • Lasts 12–18 months

• Poly-L-lactic Acid – e.g., Sculptra®

  • Stimulates collagen production

  • Gradual results over months; lasts up to 2 years

• Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) – e.g., Bellafill®

  • Semi-permanent; used for deep wrinkles or acne scars

What to Expect

• Treatment time: 30–60 minutes

• Results: Immediate (for HA fillers); some products build over weeks

• Downtime: Minimal; some swelling/bruising for 1–5 days

• Longevity: 6–24 months depending on filler type and area

Risks and Side Effects

• Temporary: Swelling, redness, bruising, tenderness, lumpiness

• Rare but serious: Vascular occlusion (if filler blocks a blood vessel), infection, granulomas

• Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed

Tips Before and After Treatment

 

Before Treatment

• Avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and Vitamin E (3–5 days prior)

• Inform your injector of any health conditions or medications

​

After Treatment

• Ice the area (gently) to reduce swelling

• Avoid intense exercise, heat, and alcohol for 24–48 hours

• No facial massage unless instructed
